Westcott East Neighborhood Association May 9, 2011 DRAFT Meeting minutes NEXT MEETING: Monday, June 13, 2011 Persons registering as in attendance: WENA Board: Barbara Humphrey, Alice Honig, Jill Ouikahilo, Doug Roth, Charles Tremper, Marilyn Zaleon WENA members and guests: Bruno Daniele (SPD), Anthony Gigliotti, Kate Hammer, Harry Lewis, Grace McNamara, Lindsay Speicher. 1. Welcome and introductions (no news please) Barbara called the meeting to order at 6:30. 2. Presentation of Apr. 11 minutes for approval: Barbara Humphrey Jill moved and Marilyn seconded their approval; passed unanimously. 3. Financial Report: Barbara Humphrey In Starke’s absence, Barbara announced there’d been no great changes in finances; $10.00 in dues paid at meeting . As far as our Summit FCU accounts: Savings is $1978.18 and checking is $5 equaling $1983.18. 4. Program/Outreach Initiatives: maybe hold discussion a. Networking with Other Neighborhood Organizations and the City i. WCC Newsletter Insert: Not enough news for a June insert; Barbara will ask Steve Sussman to include a brief announcement of the September garage sale in the larger newsletter. ii. Eastside TNT: economic development is topic for May 12 meeting iii. University Neighborhood Partnership: next meeting May 16; parking and related issues continues as a focus. iv. Westcott Leadership Roundtable (WLR): next meeting May 26 1. Welcoming residents: has begun; Lindsay will send list to Jill and Barbara; cumulative list for past month to be sent. WENA hopes to personalize mailing with information on organization, meeting, etc. 2. Welcome to Eastside brochures being sent (these date from 2006); when supply exhausted, replacement needed such as information sheet highlighting the businesses. 3. Harry distributed copies of the Morningside Trail brochure and map. v. UNPA housing plan: Marilyn reported students would be submitting data and analyses to the group, which is prepare a final product, including a vision statement, goals, and action plans. Draft will be shared with the organizations before it becomes final. Additional forums will be held in the fall. vi. WCC Art Trail sponsorship: WENA board members voted unanimously to spend $25.00 for an ad in this year’s flyer. 5. Police Storefront Update: Officer Bruno Daniele raised the following: a. Burglary at 111 Redfield: door left unlocked. b. 3 robberies: at 534 Westcott, on Comstock, and in Thornden Park: arrests have been made. Suggestions offered on how to avoid becoming a robbery target. Reminder: To contact Officer Daniele on his cell phone: (315) 454-2575 6. Old/New Business a. Earth Day, Apr. 30: goal to cover Westcott from E. Genesee to Euclid. Three WENA members participated along with 15 UCF and 5 CCE volunteers. Starke and Barbara cleaned tree pits and planted daylilies. Discussion turned to the need for trash cans and issues concerning advertisements on them (which could fund their installation). Lindsay will take issue to Andy Maxwell for a second look at the legal issues about the ads. b. Retreat follow-up: i. Welcoming new residents: See above. ii. Quality of life + Westcott theatre: Electrical connections in place; should eliminate need for buses idling in lots. iii. Fundraising: Barbara proposed a small group of those interested meet. iv. Jill raised the need for additional crosswalks on Westcott. There will be a stop sign at S. Beech. c. Gifford Foundation “What if” mini grants: possible for public spaces project d. Westcott business updates: construction continues on the Dell St. Building; Taste of India could open as soon as June. No news on former 7-rays building. e. Daffodil days—Alice urged folks to take the time to thank Peter Wirth for all his bulb project efforts which are paying off right now. f. I-81 challenge: those attending offered positive comments as to how it was run; survey available online; second round of meetings to be held in fall. g. Garage sale: scheduled for September 10? 7. SU student move out trash plan: To begin May 9 and continue for 3 weeks; limited to side streets off Euclid. 8. Cuse cars: cost involves membership fee + rental; a possibility for folks who use a car infrequently. Currently program runs through WCC where car is kept. 9. Winter 2011-12 snow removal program: grant will cover 3 routes: Broad to Lancaster; Westcott to Euclid; Euclid to SU. Could expand if sufficient interest among residents of nearby blocks. Outreach to begin in summer; coordinated by Steve Sussman. Kate Hammer offered to coordinate a smaller group of those interested to work on this issue. 10. Announcements and good news a. Refugee clothing drive to be held May 21 at 3 locations. b. Berry Park to be closed to traffic beginning Memorial Day. 11. Upcoming Events: a. Eastside TNT: Tuesday, May 12, 7 pm, Levy School; public spaces project on agenda. b. Thornden Park annual meeting: June 2, 6:30 p.m., Carriage House. c. Art Trail, June 4-5. d. Noam Chomsky lecture, Nottingham H.S., May 11.
