Westcott East Neighborhood Association December 14, 2009 Minutes NEXT MEETING: Monday January 11, 6:30 pm, Petit Library Persons registering as in attendance: WENA Board: Starke Donnally, Tony Gigliotti, Barbara Humphrey, Grace McNamara, Jill Ouikahilo, Charles Tremper, Marilyn Zaleon WENA Members and Guests: Jennifer Karius, Steve Weigl, 1. Welcome and introductions (no news please): Barbara called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. and announced that Alice Honig had called from the hospital. Thanks to ..... for the treats. 2. Presentation of November 23, 2009 minutes for approval: Various spelling errors (Encarnacion, McNamara) were pointed out; Tony and Jill should be added to those attending. Starke moved and Grace seconded the approval of the minutes; passed unanimously 3. Financial Report: Starke reported interest earnings ($1.35) and $21.00 remaining in checking; no dues or other transactions reported. a. Sharon ??? asked what WENA did with its money. Members reported donations to the Westcott Fair, Petit's summer reading program as well as money for plantings and the like. Outreach and attendant activities are possible. 4. Board Membership/Annual Meeting a. New Board Member Suggestions: Barbara repeated the call for members and the desirability of new faces and ideas, again raising the possibility of members from 560 Allen. b. Confirmation of Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 7, 5:30 pm, One Village Dance Centre: confirmed 5. Program/Outreach Initiatives a. Safety Report (S. Weigl): i. Two teens, estimated 13-15 years of age, committed 3 daylight armed robberies in the vicinity of Fellows/Harvard. Not year apprehended; Idea raised that the acts were perhaps related to gang initiations. ii. Parking: "meter checkers" patrol during the day along Westcott from Euclid to E. Genesee; Barbara and others reiterated the need to have patrols during the evening and emphasized that the actions discouraged patronage of businesses and represented a radical shift in practice from non-monitoring of meters. b. Networking with Other Neighborhood Organizations and the City i. Eastside TNT: Marilyn reported on discussions related to the plan and a presentation on the Kennedy Square re-development by Upstate. ii. University Neighborhood Partnership: no meeting. iii. UNSAAC: community meeting is Dec.28; WENA has 2 proposals in, one on the community garden, the other on Web site development. iv. Westcott Leadership Roundtable: no meeting. 6. Old/New Business a. Westcott Walking Patrol—Barbara thanked Steve for the November report and said the merchant report was needed. b. Westcott Sidewalk Snow Removal Project: Tony reported that the project would include both sides of Euclid, with Barbara adding comments about Westcott and Harvard up to a block from Levy. Barbara reported raising the snow removal issue as a public safety issue at the transition meeting. Tony raised funding needs in light of the oft discussed Rochester model. c. Seven Rays: will re-locate to Armory Square, an area of greater potential in terms of foot traffic, etc. The building is up for sale; discussion turned to what is needed on Westcott. This is a prime location and their leaving will result in a shake-up in the business area. 7. Announcements and Good News: a. Starke read a letter from Petit thanking WENA for its $250 donation toward the summer reading program; over 150 young people were served. b. John Oldfield's memorial service will be in Preble Hill. c. Corey Driscoll has resigned her position with SU and will be working for the new mayor. 8. Upcoming Events: a.
